A cast-iron skillet is appealing when you want cookware with a long service life and are comfortable with a particular handling and care routine. It is not automatically the easiest pan for every meal or every cook.
What matters before you buy
The diameter on a label does not tell the whole story. Compare the flat cooking surface, side shape and whether you can lift the loaded pan safely. A helper handle can matter more in daily use than a decorative finish. Confirm compatibility with your cooktop and oven instructions, including any restrictions associated with lids or handle covers.
Living with it
Follow the maker’s cleaning, drying and seasoning guidance. Traditional bare cast iron and enamelled cast iron are different surfaces and should not be treated as interchangeable. Store the pan dry and deal with stuck food using an approved method rather than assuming every household cleaner is appropriate.
Compare the alternatives
A lighter pan can be easier for frequent lifting, and other surfaces may suit a different cooking style. Cast iron makes more sense when you value its particular cooking behaviour and durability enough to accommodate the weight. An enamelled casserole is a different investment with its own limits.
